I spent some time this morning taking advantage of the sunlight and taking photos of little hootie owls. After looking at them, though, I think I need to redo the whole thing. I think I set the exposure too high, and everything looks a bit washed out. I did get one lovely photo, though. This little hootie owl hanging in a metal tree I found at Joanne Fabrics last fall.

Now it’s back to the light box, to try to get some truer colors. Wish me luck! or better yet, share some tips with me for getting great photos, because I’m often underwhelmed with my photos. What are your secrets?

UPDATED: I retook all the photos with a lower exposure, and everything looks much better. I listed the whole flock of owls on Etsy.

You may have noticed by now that I’m a fan of photos of Anodyne Design items in “action.” Most of these photos come after someone has purchased the item, but it has recently come to my attention that there is whole other realm of possibility for action shots: wandering photographers at craft show and farmers’ markets. Farmers’ markets in particular seem to be especially appealing to the itinerant photographer, and apparently even photographers cannot resist the cuteness of the Little Hootie Owl.

This photo of the Little Hooties recently appeared in the Bloomington Farmers’ Market weekly newsletter:

And this one was taken at the recent craft fair at the FRC:

Thanks for taking, and sharing, such lovely photos! Oh, and if you happen to be the sort of photographer who’s drawn to farmers’ markets, check out the flickr pool I created for photos taken at the Peoria RiverFront Market. The Market starts up again the first Saturday in June. Bring your camera.

I was pretty excited about the coming of April. Surely, that would mean the end of the crazy winter weather we’ve had hanging around and a return of green grass, balmy breezes, and sunny days. Yeah, right. The weather this year has been such a tease. The day we moved in February it was in the sixties. Today, it’s below freezing. And when I opened my window this morning, I found over an inch of snow on the ground. It was not a pleasant surprise.

I went out to take a picture of the snow to share, but instead, you’re getting these little flowers that are starting to blossom on the trees. They weren’t expecting snow either. And frankly, I’d rather focus on them, instead of the cold, white ground below.

I put together a new lightbox for myself tonight. The last one I had did not make the move with me, and I’ve been struggling to take nice photos without one. I followed the tutorial on Photodoto to make the one pictured above. It’s simple and quick to put together, and all you really need are a couple of pieces of poster board, an exacto knife, and some tape or glue. On Photodoto they use fancy flashes to illuminate the lightbox. I don’t have a lot of fancy photo equipment, so I settled for two desk lamps I had on hand. I think they do the job pretty well. You can see in the picture I immediately put the lightbox to work with a new wristlet. You can check out the resulting photos in the listing.

Of course, lightboxes aren’t just for pretty pictures of inanimate objects. They also make for pretty pictures of pretty kitties.

It was a little chilly, but the fresh air felt good. I could finally see some signs of spring, which warmed my heart. I took my camera, and here are a few of my favorite photos from the walk. There were lots of lovely daffodils in full bloom, but it was the flowering trees that really caught my eyes. (As always, click the images to see a larger version.)

Children never have to worry about how they’re going to get the half inch of ice that’s encasing their car melted in freezing temperatures so they can drive to work on icy roads tomorrow. And children never worry about trees overwhelmed with ice falling through the roof. Let’s pretend we’re children for a moment and simply enjoy how beautiful ice can be. I’ve always thought that tree branches encased in ice looked magical. (Click on the image for a larger, prettier version.) I have a few more photos from our chilly day on flickr.
